Product & creative direction · the CTO who owns how it looks

Your product looks designed by committee. Your investors noticed.

Your pitch deck says one thing. Your product says another. Your marketing site says a third. That inconsistency is costing you deals, diluting your brand, and signaling to investors that nobody is steering the ship. You do not need a design agency. You need the CTO who ensures the product experience matches the business strategy. Alastair Monte Carlo has directed experience for Shady Records, Interscope, and H Lorenzo, and built a global luxury technology brand from zero. He is the named owner your board can ask about experience debt.

Who does the work

Design direction and systems architecture are usually two hires that disagree with each other. Here they are one person. I have directed experience for Shady Records, Interscope, and H Lorenzo, and I architect the systems underneath the surfaces I design. One story from deck to product, one name accountable for both.

The failures

Three product experience failures that kill deals.

Failure 01

The deck and the product disagree.

Investors open the product after the pitch. When the interface contradicts the narrative they just heard, the diligence conversation changes tone. Consistency is not cosmetic; it is evidence of operational control.

Failure 02

Every sprint ships a different brand.

Without component governance, each team invents its own buttons, spacing, and tone. The product accretes visual debt the way codebases accrete technical debt, and it compounds just as fast.

Failure 03

Agencies deliver artifacts, not systems.

A rebrand PDF does not govern next quarter’s features. Agencies hand over assets and leave; nobody owns the system that keeps a thousand future decisions coherent. That owner is a CTO responsibility.

The deliverables

CTO-level creative direction, governed.

Deliverable 01

Brand system architecture.

The foundation investors evaluate before your pitch: identity, typography, color, voice, and the rules that bind them, engineered as a system your teams can execute without a designer in the room.

  • Identity system with usage governance
  • Typography and color architecture
  • Voice and content standards for technical products
  • Investor-materials alignment: deck, site, product, one story
Deliverable 02

Design system direction.

Component governance that engineering teams actually follow: tokens, primitives, and review gates wired into the development workflow, not a Figma file nobody opens.

  • Token and component architecture
  • Engineering handoff and review gates
  • Accessibility and performance budgets
  • Adoption metrics per sprint
Deliverable 03

Product UX strategy.

User flows that convert, measured against business outcomes: activation, retention, and expansion, not just how it looks in a portfolio.

  • Flow audits against conversion data
  • Onboarding and activation redesign
  • Pricing-page and upgrade-path direction
  • Experiment roadmap with owners
Deliverable 04

Experience governance.

The standing function that keeps every touchpoint coherent as you scale: release reviews, brand QA, and the authority to say no before inconsistency ships. Proven building entertainment platforms for Shady Records and Interscope, luxury retail for H Lorenzo, and a globally deployed luxury technology brand from zero.

  • Release-gate experience reviews
  • Cross-touchpoint consistency audits
  • Vendor and agency direction when you do use them
  • Quarterly board reporting on experience debt

Common questions

Asked before every engagement.

Is this a design service?

No. Designers produce screens; this engagement produces the system and governance that make every future screen coherent. When production design capacity is needed, we direct it, whether that is your in-house team or an agency we manage on your behalf.

What is brand system architecture?

The engineered version of a brand: identity, typography, color, voice, and usage rules expressed as tokens, templates, and governance rather than a static PDF. It is the difference between a rebrand that decays in a quarter and one that compounds for years.

What is product experience governance?

A standing review function with authority: experience checks wired into release gates, consistency audits across every touchpoint, and a named owner your board can ask about experience debt the way they ask about technical debt.

Do I need a separate designer or agency?

Usually less than you think. Most companies have adequate production capacity and absent direction. Where real gaps exist, we specify, hire, or contract them under direction, so you buy exactly the capacity the system needs and nothing more.

What credentials support this capability?

Creative direction for entertainment platforms at Shady Records and Interscope Records, product experience for luxury retail at H Lorenzo in Los Angeles, and a globally deployed luxury technology brand built from zero with 120+ translated pages across five languages, all delivered by the same person who architects the systems underneath.

Your move

Request the experience audit.

Two weeks, fixed fee. You keep the experience-debt map and the remediation roadmap whether or not we go further. Ninety days after that, your deck, your site, and your product tell one story, and the next investor who opens the product finds evidence of control.

All engagements protected by NDA. Communications encrypted end-to-end.
